Negril, Montego Bay, or Ocho Rios — three very different vacations on the same island. Here's the honest breakdown from people who live and work in all three.
Negril for the beach + sunset vibe. Montego Bay for convenience + nightlife. Ocho Rios for waterfalls + cruise stops. Most travellers should pick Negril if they're new to Jamaica.

Negril sits on the western tip of the island. Seven Mile Beach is the headline — soft white sand, calm Caribbean water, no big waves, no rocks. The West End cliffs above Pirate's Cave have the cliff bars (Rick's Cafe being the most famous) and the world-class sunsets. The vibe is slow. Restaurants don't rush you. Beach bars stay open until you leave.
Pick Negril if: You want a beach-first vacation, you love sunsets, you're on honeymoon, you don't need to be near everything, you've been to Jamaica before and want to slow down.
Skip Negril if: You only have 3–4 nights and want to see waterfalls + cliffs + town in one trip. The drive to Ocho Rios attractions eats half a day each way.
MoBay is the airport city. Sangster International is right there — five minutes from the all-inclusive belt. The Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) has two solid miles of restaurants, bars, casinos, and beach access. Doctor's Cave Beach is right in the middle of town. You can do day trips in any direction — Negril 90 minutes west, Ocho Rios 90 minutes east, Falmouth 30 minutes north.
Pick MoBay if: You're on a short trip (3–5 nights), you want everything walkable, you want nightlife, you're hesitant about Jamaica and want airport access close.
Skip MoBay if: You came to Jamaica for the natural beauty. The city is fine, but it's not why people fly here.
Ocho Rios has the densest concentration of attractions on the island. Dunn's River Falls is here. Mystic Mountain bobsled is here. Blue Hole / Secret Falls is 25 minutes inland. Konoko Falls is in town. Most cruise ships dock here, which means there's a daily 8 AM tourist swarm — but the town quiets down by 4 PM when the ships leave.
Pick Ocho Rios if: You want adventure (waterfalls, ziplines, bobsled) without long drives, you have kids who need stuff to do, you're combining a cruise stop with a longer Jamaica trip.
Skip Ocho Rios if: Your priority is beach time. The beaches here are smaller, often resort-controlled, and not as good as Negril.
Most first-time visitors should pick Negril — it's the most distinctly Jamaican experience and the beach is the best on the island. If you're tight on time (under 5 nights), MoBay is the sensible base. Ocho Rios is the right choice if you're an adventure traveller, cruise stopover, or have active kids. Many of our guests do two bases — 4 nights Negril, 3 nights Ocho Rios — and we drive them between.
