The cruise line will sell you a shore excursion. We can sell you a better one for less. Here's what they're not telling you on the ship.
Private tours give you smaller groups, faster access, more flexibility, and similar cost. Cruise line excursions give you guaranteed return-to-ship insurance and zero planning. We never make a guest miss their ship — but we'll tell you when the cruise excursion is the safer choice.
Every dimension that actually matters when you're picking between these options.

| Time at attraction | Longer — you control it | Limited — group must move |
| Pace | Yours | Slowest person sets it |
| Price/person | $80–150 (depending on tour) | $90–200 |
| Return-to-ship guarantee | We have never made a guest miss | Cruise line insurance if delayed |

Cruise line shore excursions are designed to be safe, repeatable, and predictable. The bus picks you up at the terminal with 40 others. You drive together to one attraction (Dunn's River, say). You wait while the group goes through together. You eat lunch at a contracted restaurant. You drive back. You're on the ship by 4 PM. It's fine. It's also expensive, slow, and generic.
The single legitimate advantage is the return-to-ship guarantee. If the cruise line's bus is delayed, the ship technically waits or holds your booking. With independent excursions, you're on the hook to get yourself back. (For the record: we have never had a guest miss their ship. We build huge buffers and obsess over the timing. But we say it openly.)
We meet you at the cruise terminal exit with a sign with your name. You're in the vehicle — yours alone — within 10 minutes. Your driver is local, knows the roads, and knows the attraction. We do the most-popular cruise day combinations — Dunn's River + Mystic Mountain, Negril cliffs + Pelican Bar, Luminous Lagoon + Falmouth town — none of which the cruise line offers as a single trip. We're back at the terminal 90+ minutes before all-aboard. Always.
Cruise line shore excursions average $90–200 per person depending on the activity. Our private tours run $80–150 per person depending on group size — 4 people splits the cost more efficiently than 2. For a couple, the cost is roughly equal. For a family of 4–6, private is significantly cheaper.
You also save on the cruise line's mandatory shopping/photo stops they build in to push extra revenue. Your driver isn't getting commissions to take you to a jewellery store you didn't ask about.
Pick a private tour for almost every cruise day in Jamaica. Better experience, smaller group, more time at attractions, similar (or lower) cost. Pick a cruise line excursion only if you genuinely cannot risk being late back to the ship and you'll panic without the guarantee. We've never made a guest miss their ship — but you have to choose how comfortable you are with that.
